Unlike a vague "vibe", Chinese compatibility follows a fixed structure based on how far apart two animals sit in the 12-year cycle.
The four affinity triangles โ animals four years apart, considered highly compatible because they share values and pace: Rat–Dragon–Monkey (driven, quick-thinking), Ox–Snake–Rooster (steady, hard-working), Tiger–Horse–Dog (idealistic, freedom-loving), Rabbit–Goat–Pig (gentle, home-loving).
The six secret friends (ๅ ญๅ) โ each animal's single strongest bond: Rat–Ox, Tiger–Pig, Rabbit–Dog, Dragon–Rooster, Snake–Monkey, Horse–Goat. The six clash pairs (ๅ ญๅฒ) โ animals six years apart, the hardest match: Rat–Horse, Ox–Goat, Tiger–Monkey, Rabbit–Rooster, Dragon–Dog, Snake–Pig. The six harm pairs (ๅ ญๅฎณ) are a milder friction: Rat–Goat, Ox–Horse, Tiger–Snake, Rabbit–Dragon, Monkey–Pig, Rooster–Dog.
Anything not on those lists is neutral โ a relationship built on effort rather than the calendar.

Each pairing page rates the match from Excellent (secret friends) down to Difficult (clash pairs), then explains how it tends to play out in love, friendship and work, where the friction usually shows up, and one practical thing to try. The ratings describe broad tendencies, not verdicts โ plenty of "clash" couples build long, happy relationships. Treat them as a starting point for a conversation about pace and temperament.
